Booked by 3: January 2007 Edition

A simple question this time: What were your favorite 3 books read in 2006 and why?

Leave your answers in the comments or in your blog with a link here. I'll give my answers in a few days.

  1. I'm not sure if you meant books published in 2006 or read in 2006.
Since I believe I only read 2 books that were published in 2006 I will go with books I read in 2006 in no particular order.

    1. The Dante Club: A Novel by Matthew Pearl. Why did I like this book? I was wowed by Dante's inferno so I was drawn to a fictional book that uses Dante's work. The characters and the setting really sold me on the book. I recommend it.

    2. The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Again, I really enjoyed the characters and the time period it was set in.

    3. The Last Town on Earth: A Novel by Thomas Mullen. A story about the Spanish Flu epidemic in the Pacific Northwest during WWI.Sometimes we do not realize how nice we have it with modern drugs. The fact that half of my family and my office had the flu while I read the book probably heighted my enjoyment of the story.

  2. 1. Mom's Cancer by Fies. It is a graphic novel about the author's mother when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was truthful and hard-hitting.
    2. Education of a wandering man by L'Amour. This autobiography tells a story of a true bibliophile who worked his way around the world. I don't usually like western writers but I may make an exception for Louis L'Amour after reading this book.
    3. Poison Study by Snyder. This new author blends truly memorable characters with action, intrigue, danger, and a little romance. I had a hard time putting this work of fantasy down.

  3. I meant read in 2006, Rob. I rarely read books in their copyright or published year. ;)

I loved The Alienist. And The Dante Club is one I'm considering. Thanks for the rec.

The others you and Jess mentioned sound interesting. I'll have to check on them. Thanks.

  4. Shelly's Bookshelf asked the following question.

It was really hard to pick my top 3 books of the 200 I read last year. I had to go back through the list of all the books I read and reviewed, then the list of what I classified as favorite and influential books as I read them. This caused me to really ponder what would be the top 3. Here is what I came up with:

God Rides a Yamaha - Kathie Shaidle
Which is the story of a woman's struggle with faith, doubt, and lupus.

May Crowning, Mass, and Merton: And Other Reasons I Love Being Catholic - Liz Kelly
A great book where one women share's what she really loves about the Catholic tradition.

Life After God - Douglas Coupland
An awesome book, that is really hard to describe.

I have linked to my reviews of each of these three. It was really hard to narrow the list to 3. It would have been easier to choose 3 fiction and 3 non-fiction, but that was not the question given.

  5. Inspired by a trip to England I read "A Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey. That lead me to "The Sunne in Splendour" by Sharon Penman. They were both about Richard III and that is a period of English history I loved becoming more acquainted with. I don't think he was responsible for the death of his nephews.

I read "The Shooting Party" by Isabel Colegate, a great book about the British upper classes just before World War I.

I loved "The Historian", by Elizabeth Kostova. I was surprised at how interesting the Dracula legend is, but I mostly just wanted to be the girl traveling all over Europe with her fascinating father.
