I'm getting to this a few days later than planned. You can blame my newest addiction: flickr.
This month we'll pick up where we left off last month.
1. How many books did you read last year?
2. Which one was your favorite?
3. Which one did you like the least?
My answers in the next day or so.
As usual, with answer 1) I have NO IDEA. I cant' bring myself to make those lists that people make; somehow it gives me the creeps to think of listing everyting I read. I don't know why but I have images of that triggering a listing of other things and I don't want to be that, um, inner-directed? I can't even track what I reviewed since some is the OTHER computer, (don't ask) but I sort of vaguely count maybe 40 or more reviews, mostly of mystery but also sf/fantasy and non-fiction.
ReplyDeletePicking a favorite book is like picking a favorite author, piece of music or musician. I can't. OF the best of 2005 I would include Mary Doria Russell's A THREAD OF GRACE, James Sallis' DRIVE, Laura Lippman's TO THE POWER OF THREE, Dave King's THE HA-HA, and Cory Doctorow's SOMEONE COMES TO TOWN, SOMEONE LEAVES TOWN. But those re the reviewed books and I simply am not sure what I left out. The library used to let us keep a list and I used to be able to go back to it but alas....
There was also Jasper Fforde's THE BIG OVER EASY, LIVE FROM PLANET EARTH, a collection of stuff by George Alec Effinger, and Louise Ure's first book, FORCING AMARYLLIS. I can't stop. Help!!
Like the least? Who remembers? I mean I don't READ books I dislike - do you? If so, why? I have managed to finish a few books and wonder why but mostly I don't bother. And it's not even a question of "so many books so little time" I just don't see why anyone would do that - read a bad book. Or a book she doesn't like. Eu. So there were LOTS of mysteries I started and got rid of in 10, 20, 30, 50 pages. But boy do I know recall most of them because there were too many. WAY too many.
I had to keep a reading journal in 6th grade (our teacher made us do it) and got into the habit. And it's fun to look back and see what I've read and when.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am fussy with what I read and I don't keep reading books I don't like, but even though it's hard to pick favs, there are some I like more than others. You'll see my answers soon. :)
1) I believe I read about 115 books last year.
ReplyDelete2) Oh boy, I couldn't pick just one! A few excellent books that come to mind are STRANGE AFFAIR by Peter Robinson, BROKEN PREY by John Sandford, SECRET DEAD MEN by Duane Swierczynski, THE WHEELMAN by Duane Swierczynski, and DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER by Jeff Lindsay. Those were all amazing.
3) This one is easy - WAYNE'S DEAD by Christy Tillery French. It was absolutely horrible, filled with just about every cliche and the most stupid characters you could imagine. Blech.
Oooh, I've heard good things about Dearly Devoted Dexter. I might have to give it a look. Thanks, Tania, and thanks for playing. :)
ReplyDelete1.) I didn't count the books I read, so I have no idea.
ReplyDelete2.) My favorite was DEFINATELY The Genesis Wave by John Vornholt. It's a Star Trek book and it's SOOOO good!!! I really got into sci-fi books last year.
3.) I also don't read books that I don't like... if I get through like chapter 2, and the book still doesn't interest me, I quit reading.
DO read DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER. It's unlike anything you've ever read and I think any of us who've read it have been surprised by it. To describe this book OR DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, you'd think "EUUU, no THANK YOU" but I gotta say (I haven't read the second one yet) it was a knockout of a book. How the author does what he does (create a plausible character you t least understand, even if it's hard to have sympathy for him?) is remarkable.
ReplyDeleteI hesitated to read the author for quite a while and then went ahead; sort of the same reaction I had to The Lonely Bones which I thought "hmmmm, I dunno about this" and wow, was it GOOD. I'd say "try it" if you're at all interested. Heck get it from the library! (just in case)
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is definitely on my list and I've put a star next to it. Will check in B&N to see if there's a pb yet. I had it listed as a 2004 hardcover. And I've added Dearly Devoted Dexter to my list, too. Those titles are so similar, I hadn't realized there were now 2. :) Thanks, Andi and Tania.
ReplyDeleteI read a lot, but the one that I read and had the most fun with was one called, "Those Damn Flying Cows." It was pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteanswers up on my page. :D
ReplyDeleteWhile we haven't read the book, my partner did buy a tee shirt last year illustrationg "That Darn Squid God". Do we think one should read that before, during, after or alongside "Those Damn Flying Cows" (which I admit, really deserves looking at for title alone, and I don't read books for their titles. Mostly.)
ReplyDeleteSometimes, some titles are hard to resist reading the books. Those are good ones.
