ReplyDeleteHi. You replied some time ago to a post I made about Modesty Blaise. I've just posted a link to an interview with Peter O’Donnell that has some Modesty-related information that you might find interesting. I know I did: http://detectivesbeyondborders.blogspot.com/2007/02/meet-real-modesty-blaise.html

Hi, Peter. Thanks for the link. I'm a big Modesty Blaise fan. :)
ReplyDeleteThis discussion is spurring my interest. I've only read Modesty Blause. I may have to track down some more of the novels.

I prefer the strips because I'm a big comics fan and have been reading comics and cartoons since I could read. But the books are interesting and get a bit deeper into the characterization.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone published collections of the strips? As I read the first novel, I tried to imagine what the strips would be like. I imagined something like a combination of Mary Worth and an adventure strip.
ReplyDeleteIf you're a comics fan, you might be interested in a post I made at: http://detectivesbeyondborders.blogspot.com/2007/03/bandes-dessines.html I noted, among other things, the lack of American crime "comics" as compared to French.

There are many collections of the Modesty strips, usually 3 stories per collection, from Titan Books. It's been through the collections that I discovered Modesty and the strips. I found the novels after reading the strips. However, the first strips I read had been reproduced in magazine format with other strips, back in the '70s.
ReplyDeleteThere have been plenty of American crime comic strips, but they've fallen out of popularity. Little Orphan Annie, later called Annie (and it's still around) was suspense oriented, as were strips like Steve Roper. Even Leonard Starr's On Stage, one of my all-time favorites, about an actress married to a reporter, had many crime-oriented stories. And there was/is Dick Tracy, of course. There were others back when I was growing up, but titles are escaping me. People read comic strips for laughs mostly now I guess.
BTW, I have a blog about comics:
http://shellyscomics.blogspot.com.
Dick Tracy had come to mind of course, but . . . well, all I can say is that I'm not used to the idea of crime comics for adults. I remember Steve Roper as one of the "serious" strips I avoided when I was a child.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for letting me know about your comics blog. I'll take a look.
Peter
